Where is Hill Head beach and what is it like?

Hill Head is on the borough's south coast, south of Stubbington. The council's Hill Head page describes it as an attractive residential area with a shingle beach that forms Fareham's boundary with the sea, and notes that it is a starting point for coastal walks east towards Lee-on-the-Solent and west to Meon Shore and the River Hamble estuary. It says the shore looks out over the Solent towards the Isle of Wight. The same page mentions the Brownwich and Chilling nature reserve nearby, with footpaths and a pond for spotting wildfowl.

The council's beach facilities page lists public toilets operating year round at six foreshore locations, including Meon Shore, Cliff Road, Salterns Beach, Monks Hill Beach and Warsash Hard. It also lists five sailing clubs across the borough, including Hill Head, which is handy as a landmark when you are finding your way along the front. It says there are designated swimming areas along the Hill Head foreshore.

Is there a free open day at Titchfield Haven?

Yes, on Saturday 24 October 2026. Bird Aware Solent says its rangers will help host an open day at Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve, on Cliff Road, Fareham, with free entry to the reserve between 10am and 3pm and free activities for adults, families and children. It is part of the Great Coastal Birdwatch, which runs from 17 October to 1 November 2026. The event is weather dependent, so look at the Titchfield Haven open day page for updates before you set off. For the reserve's visiting arrangements on other days, see the county council's Titchfield Haven pages.

How does parking at Hill Head and Meon Shore work?

The council's coastal car parks page lists Monks Hill, Salterns Road, Meon Shore and Hove-To among the coastal car parks that charge, with charging hours and a maximum stay for each. The pay machines take cash, card or the PayByPhone app, and for PayByPhone you use the location number shown at the machine in each car park. Coastal car parks are free to anyone with a valid Blue Badge, which must be displayed with the expiry date clearly visible. The council also sells Coastal Parking Permits, with a concessionary rate for Fareham residents. Charges and rules can change, so check the machine and the council page on the day. For parking in the town centre, see our Fareham town centre parking guide.

Are there beach huts at Hill Head?

Yes. The council's beach huts page says there are two sites, both at Hill Head: Monks Hill with 60 plots and Cliff Road with 111. The huts are privately owned, so the council does not hold details of huts for sale, and any sale price is a matter between the seller and the buyer. Each owner enters into an agreement with the council for use of the plot, which includes an annual plot rent and business rates on the hut. For questions you can call the council on 01329 236100.

Can you take a dog on Hill Head beach?

There are seasonal restrictions, and the council's pages describe them in different terms, so read the signs on the day. The council's beach restrictions page says no dogs are allowed on the beaches at Salterns and Monks Hill between 1 May and 30 September each year, and that dogs must be under control at all times. A separate council news release describes an exclusion zone at the western end of Hill Head beach, from Hill Head Sailing Club to the end of the beach huts on the promenade, from 1 October to 31 March each year, to protect wintering birds. It says dog walkers can still use the promenade walkway during these periods. Our dog-friendly guide has more on where dogs are welcome.

Is the water at Hill Head safe for swimming?

The council's water quality page describes Hill Head as a designated bathing beach where the Environment Agency carries out weekly water quality checks, with the results shown on award plaques at Monks Hill and Salterns Road car parks. The page explains the Excellent, Good and Poor classifications. For the latest result and any pollution alerts, look up Hill Head on the Environment Agency's bathing water service on gov.uk. To report a pollution emergency, the council gives the Environment Agency hotline as 0800 807060.

What else is nearby?

The council's Titchfield Canal walk starts from the car park off Bridge Street in Titchfield and takes between 1 hour 40 minutes and 2 hours 15 minutes. The page notes some stiles and kissing gates and says the path can flood in bad weather. Our parks and walks guide covers the council's other routes, including the Brownwich walk, which the council says is prone to cliff erosion. For wider ideas, see things to do in Fareham.
